How long does a game of Risk take?
Short answer: A standard game of Risk takes about two to four hours, and longer with more players — the classic complaint about it is real. Shorter variants and mission cards cut it to roughly an hour. If you want the same kind of game in a single sitting, Borderfall is a free browser version whose solo games run 10 to 15 minutes.
What actually makes it long
Two things. Elimination means a player knocked out in the first hour spends the rest of the game watching, and the reinforcement pace lets a contested border stall for many turns at a time. More players multiply both effects, which is why a five- or six-player game rarely finishes when anyone expected.
The same game, faster
Borderfall keeps the core — reinforce, manoeuvre, roll, take territory, hold regions for bonuses — and changes the pacing around it. Solo games against AI run about 10 to 15 minutes. Multiplayer can be played in real time in one sitting, or asynchronously a turn at a time over hours or days, which sidesteps the scheduling problem entirely.
